Today April 3rd Japan Invades Bataan.
Today on April 3rd 1942 the Japanese launched a massive attack on Bataan. Bataan is a small peninsula on the south west portion the Philippians. Spring time in 1942 the war in the Pacific was beginning to ramp up. People tend forget the war in the Pacific was more deadly and costly the invasion of Nazi Europe. The war in the pacific was one on one for the most part. Japan vs. the United States. America was fighting an enemy willing to fight to the death without surrendering.
Japan was conquering small island’s everywhere in the Pacific in order to create air fields and naval refueling bases for their fleet. The Japanese were dominating the region. By direct order of the President of the United States, General MacArthur (Pacific Commander) could not let the Philippians fall. But today, in 1942 the Japanese invaded the island and the United States could not hold it.
The people of the Philippines loved MacArthur and the Americans. But once the invasion was inevitable Macarthur was ordered to leave to Australia by FDR. The Americans could not hold and the largest number of United States troops ever had to surrender along with the Filipino’s.
When Macarthur left he told the Filipino’s he would be back. Shortly after the surrendering the Bataan Death March took place. This was one of the biggest atrocities of the war and is a topic within its self.
Macarthur returned years later to liberate the country after the Pacific turned in favor of the Americans, and the Filipinos couldn’t have been any happier. Today might have been the date where the Japanese launched a major attack but without a doubt today was the beginning of a mass killing and extermination of US Marines along with Filipino natives.

March 27th 1841 the Steam Engine was Tested In New York City.
Today in 1841 the first steam engine was tested in New York City, sparking the United States Industrial Revolution. The steam engine was first invented in 1781 by James Whatt. The Engine was originally 10 horse power and was made to help power mills. The first mechanical non-man powered engine used heat and steam as a power source.
When Whatt first invented it he had no idea how big of an invention this was. The heat and steam caused a large source of energy. With thinkers coming along in the 1800’s they modified the steam engine to power rail cars. This gave birth to the Rail Road. This invention sparked a movement of goods and people farther and faster than ever before.
The Rail Road could move goods such as Coal and Steel across the country to help parts of America further develop. The external combustion engine (the steam engine) laid the ground work for shaping America to what it is today.
The basic concept behind it helped inventors think of the internal combustion engine we used today in our cars. The steam engine, as some scholars would say, won the Civil War for the Union. The rail roads moved their troops and supplies faster the south. The Invention of the steam engine helped build roads, skyscrapers, canals and the infrastructure that made America the way it is today. The invention not only helped build this country but kept it alive.
Rail roads were able to move medical supplies faster to people in need than ever before. It also helped people travel and make communication more reliable. The steam engine did so many things for this country. Today in 1841 that invention sparked of revolution of change and prosperity at such a fast rate we the people could barely keep up.

March 26th Bird vs. Magic NCAA Title Game, The Story Begins.
Today March 26th 1979 the greatest one on one rivalry in sports history started. The underdog Indiana State Men’s Basketball team took on Michigan States power house and stacked team. Both teams were led by infamous super stars, Larry Bird and Irving “Magic” Johnson. The Michigan State Spartans took the title home to Lansing that year as Magic Johnson was hailed a hero. Larry Bird went home to French Lick Indiana hailed to by a “choker” in the big game.
Bird went on that year to be the 6th over pick in NBA draft. Magic was the first overall pick. The Bird vs. Johnson rivalry was absolutely insane. Bird was a Celtic and Johnson a Laker. Those two teams were and still are the biggest rivalry in basketball.
The tension was, perhaps the biggest in sports history as far as fans are concerned. Magic and Bird played each other the first year in the NBA Finals, Magic got the best of Bird. Bird after that was on an absolute tear. He hated Johnson and wanted pay back for the National Championship in 1979 and NBA Finals in 1980. Bird won 3 championships before 1986 and 3 MVP’s in his first 5 years.
Magic Went on to win 5 titles and 3 MVP’s in his career. By the time the mid 1980’s came around people said Larry Bird was going to be the greatest player of all time, shortly after that he broke his back and he was never the same. In 1991 Magic Johnson was diagnosed with HIV. Both players were probably about the same as far as talent is concerned looking back on it.
Both were built the same about 6’8’’ tall and 220 pounds. Bird was a forward, Johnson was a Guard. Both were considered to be the best team players of all time both were unselfish and were supreme passers. One was Black and one was White. One was a flashy city boy and one was a quiet “redneck” from Indiana. So much can be said about the two but on this day in 1979 the rivalry started in the NCAA National Championship game.

Eric Clapton Left The YardBirds on March 13th 1965
Today march 13th 1965 Eric Clapton left the band The
Yardbirds. Famous for the 1960’s hits “For Your Love” and “Tran Kept Rollin.”The
Band was led by infamous rock starts Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. The
band wasn’t the same after Clapton’s departure.
The three men went on to do their own things. Clapton, when
leaving in 1965, went on to form the super group Cream. Beck went on to do his
own thing as a big time guitarist. Jimmy Page went on to form the late great Led Zeppelin.
Cream was voted into Rolling Stone Magazine’s Top 100 Bands of
all time. The band had the original garage band sound, with distortion and fuzz
sounds coming from their amps. Clapton went on to join the band Cream, the
world’s first super group. Cream recorded many big time hits including
“Crossroads” “White Room” and “Sunshine of Your Love.”
But Clapton didn’t stay with Cream very long.
He went on to form Derrick and the Domino’s. Where he wrote and produced one of the
greatest rock albums of all time, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. Clapton’s lead track on the Album, Layla is
one of the most famous riffs of all time.
Clapton went on to fufill one of the greatest careers in rock
history and he’s still kicking it. Clapton today back in 1965 left the band The
YardBirds looking like an idiot to leave a great band at the time. But the bands
break up went on to produced talent way bigger than itself. Music would not have
been the same if the three super stars didn’t break up to form other great
bands.

Spring Break is Over! Today, March 11th 1918 The Spanish Flu Broke out
Today March 11th 1918, the great “Spanish Flu”broke out.
Today, almost one hundred years ago the flu first broke out in Fort Riley
Kansas. A soldier was complaining of cold like symptoms, he went to the Army
Bases Doctors office. Turned out the man had the flu, but not just “the flu.”
The man had a rare strain and within the day 100 other solders became sick.
The flue spread, quicker than ever seen before. The flu spread to
the war front in Western Europe. Solders became sick in England, France, Germany
and Spain. The flu was nick named the Spanish flu due to 8 million estimated
deaths in Spain alone. The flu was the deadliest outbreak in history. 20 million
deaths were reported worldwide.
The flu broke out during the First World War. World War One had
an astronomical amount of deaths compared to wars prior. Deaths had a big part
due to new styles of mass killing such as the machine gun, tank, airplane and
chemical warfare. But, the largest amount of deaths, and most deaths during the
war were not due to battle related injuries. Most deaths were due to infections
and sickness; this was not only do to the conditions of the trenches and where
solders were quartered, but also do to the fact of not having anti-biotics.
During World War One, arguably the greatest discovery in modern
medicine was found, the anti-biotic. The first anti-biotic was penicillin. This
stopped the spread of infections caused by batteries. However, it did not stop
the flu. Today in 2013, there is a flu vaccine, but once a person is infected
by the flu virus there isn’t much doctors can do. This is because the Flu is a
virus and not a bacteria. Researches spend countless hours funding and trying
to find a stop to massive flu outbreaks.
I got a taste of this 1918 reality when this
January I was landed in the hospital with the flu. I had flu strain B when I had
received the vaccine early in the year. The vaccine this year covered flu strain
A. The Spanish Flu of 1918, the deadliest and probably 2nd most famous epidemic
next to The Black Plague popped up on U.S. soil in Kansas, March 11th.

February 28th 1994, NATO Made its First Military Strike, The World Stopped Laughing
Today February 28th 1994 the first NATO military action took
place. NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was first formed after World
War II when Germany and the city of Berlin were split in half between the USSR,
Western Europe and America. NATO was formed in order to resist the power and
tension with the communist Soviets. Russia was a land where European conquers
kept taking land, fighting wars and stripping its natural resources from the
time of Napoleon until World War II. By the 1940’s now, communist Russia, was
strong enough as a world super power to defend and kick out invaders. So the
USSR was not going to give up any land it won after World War II. If anything,
the Soviets were planning pay back for Europe’s conquests in the past. Winston
Churchill once stated that Russia was the real threat in World War II and after
Berlin fell the West should stay the course and invade the Soviets to end all
the worlds’ issues. Maybe he was right, but seeing this threat the West Created
NATO. They thought creating an alliance was a better choice than losing even
more men in a land where a war was almost impossible to win, due to its climate.
NATO consists of most countries in Western Europe, America and
Canada. Some of NATO’s purpose was to end massive of wars in Europe from
happening, like in the past. Also it was to create an alliance within Europe to
create protection for the countries where centuries of rivalries and wars took
place. The purpose was to defend against the huge threat in UUSR. The USSR had
a pact (similar to an alliance) with its socialist allies as well.
Most people thought NATO was pretty much a joke
and only protected the west from an invasion by the Soviets and did nothing
else. NATO claimed it’s self as the world super military power. When the Soviet
Union fell and NATO was the only military giant alliance in the world, they
stepped in and showed what they were mad of. In 1994 during the midst of the
Bosnian Genocide NATO conducted military operations, and enforced a no fly zone.
Today in 1994 F-16 Fighter jets shot down Serbian war planes to enforce NATO’s rule of how they thought the
world should be ruled.
NATO, from that day forward conducted several
military operations, everything from small special operations, to massive
invasion like the Second Gulf War. With supreme military power in America,
England, France, Canada and other European countries, NATO in this New World
Order, has shaped the world to how they want it. A world with minimal
catastrophic wars and for the most part a lot safer than it was when NATO first
was created. Today February 28th 1994 NATO flexed its muscles and showed the world to stay the path of
freedom and began telling leaders to conduct countries in a way where every
person has their basic human rights protected.

Today February 25th 1901, JP Morgan Creates The US Steel Corp.
On this day in 1901 J.P. Morgan created the largest merger of
super-corporations ever seen. J.P. Morgan was a famous investor and captain of
industry. He was an extremely wealthy businessman during the American Industrial
Revolution. Morgan lived 75 years of extravagance. His name to this day is still
famous with the name Chase bank. The Bank is really called J.P. Morgan Chase
bank.
J.P. Morgan was wealthy to start and always was
looking to gain more wealth to compete with his white collar buddy’s Vanderbilt,
Rockefeller and Carnegie. Yes these men did more than just create colleges and
libraries. J.P. Morgan made a huge
move early in his career that got him to have an extreme amount of wealth. He
found a young inventor named Thomas Edison, a very smart Jersey boy full of ideas.
After inventing the light bulb, Edison fully funded by Morgan,
created indoor electricity, through complex physics and basic wiring. This
brought electric light into Americans home’s for the first time. But by doing
this Edison needed to create a power grid, once again Morgan funded this. Morgan
owned the Edison Electric Light Corporation. Morgan also owned the
Thomas-Houston Electric Company at the time. Morgan merged these two self-owned
companies together to create General Electric. The two companies’ worked hand
and hand to put light and electricity into every Americans home by inventing
what we see now as “the grid.” General Electric is still one of the largest
companies in the world; GE owns the TV station NBC.
This massive investment paid off for Morgan and
he set his goal to be completely on top in the time of Monopolies. On this day
in 1901 Morgan offered the most powerful man in the world a deal he couldn’t
refuse. Morgan offered Andrew Carnegie 480 million dollars for The Carnegie
Steel Corporation, of Pittsburg PA. Carnegie took the deal and instantly became
the wealthiest man…ever. Morgan merged Carnegie Steel with some other small
steel companies to create the infamous U.S. Steal Corporation, a company that
really shaped and built America to where it is today, and it also gave the name
to the Pittsburg Stealers. It’s said Carnegie was to be worth over 298 billion dollars in today’s money, making
him easily 5 or 6 times the wealthiest man alive. Morgan was to be worth about
40 billion in today’s money making him in the ballpark of Bill Gates.
The US Steel Corporation still exist to this day and created many
careers in the Pittsburg area. The corporation created the steel that built the
sky scrapers in New York City, the steel in the Golden Gate Bridge and the Steel
on our U.S. Tanks in battle. Men like Morgan and Carnegie helped shaped this
country to where it is today. A lot of people hate on them for their
exploitation of labor and basic enslavement for their workers but they invested
and made the U.S. Economy boom. Plus Government regulation began to step in and
fix the labor problems these men supposedly caused. That’s always a problem
with capitalism and in my eyes better then, than now. To be honest I don’t know
how the government approved this merger or didn’t take the men to court for
invasion of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act of 1890. But regardless on this day 1901

Today February 20th 1792, You got mail!
Today, February 20th 1792, George Washington signed the
Postal Service Act! I am sure your thinking so what, or who cares. But, this law
signed by Washington was one of the most important laws ever signed. Before 1792
mail was not regulated by the Federal Government. Mail, often at times was a
business for the private sector and sometimes was based off the “buddy system”,
meaning that you asked your friend to deliver a letter for you if they were
headed that way. This caused massive backups and mail was not orderly and it was slow to arrive.
By creating the Federal Postal Service 13 small states that only
had roughly four million people now had the most efficient mail system in the
world, fully funded by the Federal Government. The idea was first brought to
place by founding farther, Benjamin Franklin. The idea was on the table because
during the time of the American Revolution mail was crucial for The Continental
Army and the original Government. Washington used letters and had direct routes
set up with runners to get news from Philadelphia to his position on the field.
It helped get an idea of where the British were.
The Postal Service Act was one of the first laws that put in
place by the Government after the constitution. It made mail arrive in a timely
manner, created jobs and gave the mail service the right to open mail if they
found it necessary, thus making mail safer.
Now day’s mail is so important for bills and other things of
everyday life. Some people say the industry is dying due to e-mail though.
Regardless the Postal Service will always have packages to delivered to places.
The Postal Service to this day is one of the most efficient and well ran
services in the world. Think about how much mail you get in a day, times that by
the number of households in the United States, then think about how many lost or
missing documents you have. I’d say the service is pretty darn good at what they do.
The creating of the Postal Service did a lot besides get mail to
places and created one of the first forms of mass communication. It created some
good jokes and some good songs. Have you ever had someone say “you don’t look
like your dad at all” as you respond “yea I get that a lot” and that person
cracks a smile and goes “your dad most be the mail man.” The joke is infamous
for telling and laughing about peoples moms.
Many songs were written about it. The Marvelettes 1961 hit Mr.
Postman was a huge oldies song. That song was mashed up by Lil Wayne on the
Album the Carter III, to kind of go along with the “your dad’s the mail man”thing.
All and all on today back in 1792 Washington, Franklin and other
law makers enacted the signing and creation of The United States Postal Service,
paving the way for mass communication throughout the country, making America the
first country in the world to do such a thing. Advanced Technology is what made
this country where it is today and this law was one of the first to do such a
thing.

missing documents you have.
Advanced Technology is what made
this country where it is today and this law was one of the first to do such a
thing.
Today February 18th, The Adventures of Huckleberry Fin was Published, 1885
Today in 1885 the dawning of American Literature began. The Adventures of Huckleberry
Fin, Written by Mark Twain was published and released on today February 18th 1885. The book, even
until this day is looked as controversial.
The book is about Huck and his sidekick Jim. The plot takes place
around the time of the Civil War; the men are escaping from slavery. There on a
raft traveling along the Mississippi River and are trying to reach Ohio, a free
state at the time. The story was written nearly two decades after the end of
slavery but people still didn’t approve of the book.
The book was considered to be racist and it did
not portray African-Americans in a right way. Twains book however is considered
to be one of the greatest books ever. It told a story, the way it was. I can
remember reading the book in 7th grade English class and the book gave me chills. The great Author
Ernest Hemmingway said “There was nothing before it and nothing good ever since”
in regards to Twains, TheAdventures of Huckleberry Fin.
Whether you think the book is racist or not it is worth the read.
It changed the game and sparked controversy. Just like how movies and music do
today. On this day in 1885 one of the greatest books ever was published and
distrusted. Go read it!

February 12th 1968 Keith Richards Home was Searched for Drugs
On this day in 1968 police broke into the home of
British rock star Keith Richards. Police found pounds of substances, not a
shocker. Keith Richards, the lead guitarist of the greatest rock n’ roll band of
all time, The Rolling Stones. That year on May 10th Richards and lead singer Mick Jadger
were arrested officially for the possession of drugs.
It’s an absolute shock to most people that Richards is still alive. The man has looked like a zombie since 1970. The
Rolling Stones have been making music since the early 1960’s and this year they kicked off their 50th year
adversary tour. This is a big accomplishment since most bands from that time period broke up after 10 or 15 years.
Richards was a heavy drug abuser. Keith Richards was arrested five times in his life from 1968-1979, all for drug
related problems. In 1967 he was found guilty for having pills and allowing Cannabis to be smoked on his property.
He was sentenced to a year in prison. The charges were eventually dropped due to a lack of evidence however.
Richards is the model for a D.A.R.E. poster and is the perfect
example of what heavy drugs like cocaine and heroin do to someone over a long
period of time. Richard’s legacy still lives on; he’s alive and still writing
music. Richards was considered the leader of the band and their main song
writer. In 1993 he was inducted into The Song Writers Hall of Fame. Richards was
notorious for playing in his own country-blues picking style of open G tuning.
When playing in this tuning he only uses five strings. Songs in this tuning
include the infamous licks in Brown Sugar and Start me up. It’s said The Rolling
Stones have sold more than 250 million albums.
When the making of The Pirates of the Caribbean was taking place
star actor Johnny Depp needed to model someone to fill his roll. Depp and his
production team found a perfect, awkward moving, slurring blood shot eyed man.
The character Jack Sparrow was modeled off of Richards’s movements, crazy
outfits and his hair. It was kind of funny how they basically mocked Richards’s
effects of drug abuse to make a trilogy of pirate movies.
The band was always in the spot light for controversy and drugs
on this day in 1968 Keith Richards started the tradition for the band.

On This Day February 8th 1986 Spud Webb Climed the Ladder
Size doesn’t matter. That’s how the saying goes. That’s how it
went for 5’7’’ Spud Webb on this day in 1986. Spud Webb was one of the shortest
NBA basketball players of all time. The man had a ton of heart and a hell of a story.
On this day Spud Webb won the NBA Dunk Contest, beating out his
teammate Dominique Wilkins, a 6’8’’ athletic monster. Wilkins stood a foot
taller than Webb. Webb thrilled the crowd due to his sky high jumping ability.
Webb grew up in Dallas Texas. He often had to prove himself due
to his size. But that didn’t make him ever become discouraged. His senior year
he averaged 26 points a game but Division 1 colleges didn’t recruit him due to
his lack of size. Webb, without a choice and still wanting to play the game,
played community college ball. He won a JUNCO National Championship and finally
drew Division 1 attention. He attended North Carolina State for his final two
years of college on an athletic scholarship.
When he finished up he was not drafted into the NBA. He tried out
with the Atlanta Hawks, he made the team proving guys undersize can still play
ball. Webb played 12 NBA season’s and paved the way for under 6 footers like
Earl Boykin’s, Nate Robinson and one of the NBA most prolific scores of all time, Allan Iverson.
On this day in 1986 Spud Webb showed heart as he won the NBA Dunk Contest only standing at 5 foot 7 inches tall.

Today February 4th 1977 Fleetwood Mac's Rumors was Released
On this day the band Fleetwood Mac released one the most
successful selling albums of all time, Rumors. The 1970’s rock group was
unique. Lead by guitarist Lindsay Buckingham and vocalist Stevie Nicks, the two
at one point were together as a couple, madly in love.
Also at this time Christine and John Mcvies, of the band was
married. Drummer Mick Fleetwood was also married at the time with two kids as
well. Six months before the album Rumors was released the writing for it had
begun.
Both couples in the band split up at this time and drummer Mick
Fleetwood’s wife had cheated on him. The press was all over this and created all
kinds of allegations for everyone in the band. The two song writers in the band
Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were not speaking at this time. So the
question was made by the press, would they be able to write another album.
They sure did, the two wrote songs separately and put theirs
half’s together to make an album. The only time the couple spoke was during the
playing of music. This album included songs like Go Your Own Way, Dreams, Don’t
Stop and The Chain. Go Your Own way, featured in the movie Forrest Gump, was
written by Buckingham about Nick’s departure of their relationship. Like all
the songs on the album they were written about another member of the band. When
the band had to come up with a name for this album they knew right away what it
would be, Rumors. This after all different kinds of allegations were made about the band.
Why is this important to history? President Bill
Clinton used the song Don’t Stop as his campaign song in the 1990’s. His iconic
image with him on stage with the song playing and the USC marching band playing
along with Fleetwood Mac is infamous for that time period. Today February

Today January 31st 1865 Slavery Is Outlawed
Slavery is abolished! On this day in 1865 the United States House of Representatives pass the 13th Amendment. The 13th Amendment granted freedom to all slaves and outlawed slavery. When the Civil war broke out in 1861 Lincoln’s goal wasn’t to eliminate slavery. His goal was to preserve the Union and restore order. Years went by and eventually the United States government decided to outlaw it.
In 1862 Lincoln did sign the Emancipation Proclamation, this granted freedom to slaves that were held captive in the states fighting against the Union. The Civil War wasn’t fought in order to ban slavery in the United States it was fought to bring the southern states that succeeded from the Union back into the United States of America. In fact Lincoln was supposedly a frequent user of the “N” word.
The 13th Amendment which was passed today states
“Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a
punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall
exist within the United States, or any place subject to their
jurisdiction."
The bloodiest war was fought in American History from 1861 to 1865. Within that time period the outlaw of slavery took place and a country was put back together. Two more Amendments were passed in the following years of reconstruction. The 13th, 14th and 15th amendments were some of the most important Amendments of all time. They granted freedom, citizenship for former slaves and enable African American men the right to vote. Today January 31st in 1865 the beginning of a push to assure equal rights took place.

On This Day January 29th 1845 , Poes's The Raven was Published
On this day January 29, in 1845 Edgar Allan Poe’s famous poem The
Raven was published. Poe, From Baltimore Maryland was one of the most
influential writers in American History. He wrote Poetry and short stories, most
of which had a creepy feel to them.
The Raven opens with,
“Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore, While I nodded, nearly
napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of someone gently rapping, rapping
at my chamber door.”
These words were jaw dropping. The “once upon a midnight dreary”
was used to open the famous 90’s alternative rock song Run Around by The Blues Travelers.
Poe, being from Baltimore had great influence on his city.
In 1996 when the NFL announced an expansion team would be made, they finally
brought football back to the city Baltimore after the Colts left town. The
Baltimore team was named The Ravens, after Poe’s famous poem.
The Baltimore Ravens will be playing this Sunday in NFL Super
Bowl. Just remember when Ray Lewis is running all over the field like a mad man,
that his team is named after a poem.

Today January 24th 1848 ,the San Francisco Gold Rush Started
On this day January 24th 1848, a stream started sparkling in California. That stream sparked the
famous gold rush of the Wild West.
The gold was discovered in Sutter’s Creek in the Sacramento
Valley just east of San Francisco. The creek was named after John Sutter, one
of the first settlers in California. The creek rested on his property of 50,000 acres. Sutter, a Swiss immigrant, had a vision and started his own ranch.
He received the land from Mexico as a gift. California prior to 1847 was control by Mexico. During the 1840’s a warbroke out between the United States and Mexico.
In 1847 America defeated Mexico and gained territories out west,
California being one of them. Sutter and his ranch were now a part of America by
1847. On this day in 1848 Sutter decided he needed a mill built on his property.
He hired a man named James Marshall to build his mill. While working on the mill Marshall noticed the water flowing into it began to start sparkling. When Marshall reached down to see what it was he discovered it was gold.
Sutter, knowing if the news broke out, thought everyone would
flood to his land and strip it of gold. So he tried keeping it a secret but it
didn’t work. Throughout 1848 people came to his ranch and began mining. This was
the largest gold rush ever seen.
If we skip ahead to 2013 the biggest sports news in the next
couple of weeks will be the Super Bowl. The team representing the National
Football Conference is the San Francisco 49ers. The San Francisco 49ers are
supposedly named after the great gold rush of 1849.
However, the gold rush of 1849 didn’t start in 1849. In began in
1848, so the team in the Super Bowl this year playing the Baltimore Ravens
should be named the San Francisco 48ers. History is strange at times. I suppose
the 49ers just sounded more appealing than the 48ers.
The San Francisco 49ers have an extremely successful football
franchise. They have five Super Bowl titles. But the more impressive thing is
that they’ve never lost a Super Bowl. Their franchise had many greats such as
Jerry Rice, Joe Montana and Steve young. This year’s team is led by All-Pro
Linebacker Patrick Willis and running back Frank Gore.
So next Sunday while watching the Super Bowl keep in mind the
name of the team that represent the city of San Francisco. Think of the gold
rush, and think of the year it actually happened then think of their team name.
On this day in 1848 a lot of dreams were born and a lot of men
became wealthy. To this day we see symbolisms of the great gold rush. It was a
giant movement in the Wild West and the boys representing that area next Sunday
will be representing it with the wrong year on the side of their helmets.

This Day in History, January 22nd, Roe vs. Wade 1973
Have you ever had one crazy night where you wake up the next day and can’t
remember a thing? Your buddy slowly but surely tells you what happened, and you
respond by saying “oh my god I can’t be a dad.” So, you and your buddy think to
yourselves, “Well thank god for modern medicine and legalities of this
country.”
On this day in 1973 The Supreme Court had a major case take place and a
decision was made. The decision made abortions legal all across The United
States.
The famous Roe vs. Wade case, of 1973 was and still is controversial. People
have very strong views over abortion due to political, religious and
self-beliefs that it is the murder of a child. But is it?
The court ruled in Roe’s favor, saying that life cannot live outside of its
mother womb until it has viability. Viability means when the baby can live on
its own and support its own life. This is where the debate still comes into
play. Some people think that a baby is capable of life as early as 28 weeks of
being inside the mother. Others believe it takes up to seven months. And some
people believe a baby is capable of life at the moment of conception.
It doesn’t matter what or how you feel about a sensitive topic like abortion,
the import thing is that you understand its history and how it became legal,
because the news is still saturated with this topic.
People who want budget cuts in Washington D.C. believe the federal government
should stop funding associations like Planned Parenthood. Some people believe
this organization performs abortions for people who cannot afford them. They
think this results in the federal government using tax payer money to fund
abortions. Some of these tax payers don’t support abortion, and feel that they
shouldn’t have to pay for them.
“Abortions murder babies.” (One point of view)
“Abortions prevent poverty and bad parenting.” (Another point of
view)
It does not matter who says what and what ideas people have about abortion.
Abortion is legal in the United States due to The Supreme Court case Roe vs.
Wade on January 22nd, this day 1973. It gave
women the right to decide if they should give birth to their baby or not. It may
not be the most moral decision ever made but it did helped people in in
different ways.
The decision prevented some people from going into poverty further. The
decision also helped save tax payers money by not having to fund social
programs, such as welfare and food stamps for the kids if they were born into a
less fortunate household. It helped teenage women, and men continue their
education and move on with their lives and not become “stuck.”
This was an even greater stepping stone for women showing they have equal
rights, and that a man can’t tell them what to do with their bodies. And
naturally, this law prevented a lot of young men from getting beat up by
brothers and fathers of women, for getting their girlfriends and partners
pregnant.
On this day in 1973 the infamous Roe vs. Wade case took place and sparked
controversy that continues until today in 2013.

Ethan Allen, Born Today January 21st, 1738
On this Day, in 1738, a man by the name of Ethan Allen was born. Yes, this
man made a great impact on United States history and not just in the furniture
business.
Ethan Allen was one of the great patriots during the time of The American
Revolution. His impacts not only showed the people of The Thirteen Colonies they
could break away from England, but that “Hill-Billy’s” were some hard fought,
rugged people.
Allen’s family was from Connecticut and owned land in what is modern day
Vermont. Once Allen was old enough to claim the land up north from his father he
became, a bit rowdy.
At the time, what is now Vermont was split between New Hampshire and New
York. Allen thought that the people of Vermont should have their own republic.
He believed it shouldn’t have been a part of Brittan or The Thirteen Colonies,
its own place, The Republic of Vermont. I guess Allen, In the 1770’s had a
vision of hitch hikers wearing L.L. Bean clothing, mountain men and people
driving Subaru Outback’s for the Republic of Vermont’s great future at a very
early point in time.
So in order to make Vermont become its own territory Allen and his fellow
rugged mountain men formed the Green Mountain Boys. These were tough mountain
people with pitch forks and were probably proud supporters of the second
amendment, similar to those who today, reside in Schuylkill County PA, which of
course is just north of Lebanon Valley College’s campus.
These Green Mountain Boys led by Allen decided to rebel against the British.
In 1775, a year before The Declaration of Independence was signed; The Green
Mountain Boys seized and capture a British occupied fort. Fort Ticonderoga.
Yes, Ticonderoga is the same name we see on the number two pencils you bring to
class on exam day, as you sit at a desk, praying that you won’t fail.
These men showed courage, bravery and most of all a little Appalachian
strength. New Englanders, and members of The Thirteen Colonies jump on the
“rebel against the British band wagon” when they saw it was possible to beat The
Red Coats in battle. The Colonies in the following years began to band together
just like The Green Mountain Boys did and fought a revolution in order to
establish a new republic.
Allen’s, Green Mountain Boys were a of rag tag group of established militia.
This form of an army was seen all throughout The American Revolution and helped
win the war. This paved the way for the one part of The Second Amendment “a
well-regulated militia.”
Allen’s “Hill-Billy” home boys fought a style of guerilla warfare, pretty much only
seen before in the French and Indian War. They used their “home turf” to their
advantage.
The list can go on and on as to what Allen did for American and world
history. But, one thing is for sure on January 21st 1738 a man of great leadership, innovation and
rebellion was born, changing the world forever.
man made a great impact on United States history and not just in the furniture

On This Day, January 21st in 1969
In 1969 Richard Nixon was sworn in as President. President Nixon was sworn in
in the middle of The Vietnam War. The nation was divided, and so were his brain
cells a few years later when he was thinking of how to get reelected.
President Nixon was the only United States President to resign while in
office. In 1972 his party broke into The Democratic-Committees National
Headquarters located in the Watergate building. This sparked the Watergate
Scandal. His party tried to play it off like it didn’t happen, well it did. On
August 9th, 1974 President Nixon stepped down
from office due to this incident.
August 9th just happend to be the date that the second
atomic bomb was dropped in Japan in 1945. In 1974 Washington was politically
equivalent to having a bomb dropped on it. During Nixon’s Presidency a lot of
events happened. In 1969 Woodstock took place, a concert where our baby booming
parents walked miles to go the party of the century. And in 1970 the Kent State
Massacre took place leaving four dead, at Kent State University, located in
Ohio. Protest to this can be seen by Crosby Stills Nash and Young’s lyrics to
the song Ohio “tin soldiers and Nixon’s coming, were finally on our own, this
summer I hear the drumming, four dead in Ohio”
The Watergate Scandal can be seen in the movie Forrest Gump in a funny way.
But that event made America look weak on top of having to with draw from
Vietnam. However after Nixon resigned from office Vice President Gerald Ford
took over during the mist of a period of stagflation from the Vietnam War debts
and in the middle of the 1970’s oil crisis.
It’s safe to say on this day in 1969 the Inauguration of President Nixon
didn’t lead to a pleasant time in the Republican Party.

This Day January 20th in History
Today January 20th is Inauguration day, and
it has always been a day rich with history. Just four years back President Obama
made history becoming the first African-American President of The United States.
But this event was only made possible by the civil rights movement of the
1960’s. Men like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke up and made the people listen
for equal rights of minorities. His “I Have a Dream Speech” was monumental and
paved the way for great change.
Words were spoken and a huge crowd was drawn in, similar to President Obama’s
Inauguration Speech on this day.
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a
nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the
content of their character.”
These words had such a beautiful flow, and almost fifty years after
this speech was said, we, the people finaly got a chance to
prove Dr. King right by electing an African-American president. Coincidently, Monday is Dr. King’s birthday, so take a
moment to realize the impact this man had on history.
