What is This Day in History?
My name is Dennis Brophy and
I am a sophomore at Lebanon Valley College. I study English-Communications. I am
19 years old and I am from Allentown New Jersey. A town rich in history, it sits
in Central New Jersey on the old Stage Coach Route that connected Philadelphia
to New York City in the time of The American Revolution.For
a class project in Journalism we have to create our own blogs. So going with the
fact I am a huge history nerd I decided to create a blog on events that happened
on This Day in History.
People, often at times forget how important history is. Our lives could be completely
different today if one event in history didn't have the outcome it had. From my
perspective people become smarter by understanding the past. If someone takes
time to dig down deep to understand why some things are the way they are today,
they can have a better understanding, and perhaps, not have bias views or become
one who is opinionated.
History is simply facts. It’s not like math or science where you have to make an
equation to figure something out. History, can be simple, open up a book or a
web page and find the answer. History and Literature go hand and hand. They have
the ability to tell the past through words. Everything and anything can be
explained through words. If a Math whiz or an Economist forms an equation that
alters the way we think they still have to explain it through words somehow.
I always thought of history as a bonus subject. I didn’t have to figure anything out; the answers were
there, in the book. I couldn’t believe it as a kid, the answer is giving to me?
I thought to myself. Now all I have to do is memorize it.
A lot of people think history is boring. But depending on how you look at it, it can be the most
interesting subject. You can look at geographically, if the Berlin wall never
fell would there be countries like Poland and The Ukraine today? And would a
Nuclear Holocaust have happened?
Or you can look at it sociologically, why is it that a lot of countries in Africa are not developed?
Europeans conquers colonized Africa in the 17th 18th 19thand 20th centuries stripping the land of its
natural resources and forcing millions into slavery. Things like wars, uprising
and ethnic clashes have taken place in Africa because of a result of European
colonization of the land.
No matter what way you look at it, history tends to be ironic and somewhat funny. Thomas Jefferson, the
writer of The Declaration of Independence, a philosopher, a President and a man
who thought of slavery as immoral wrote one of the best lines of literature in
The Declaration of Independence and is known for it.
“We hold these truths to be
self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their
Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and
the pursuit of Happiness.”
All men are created equal?
It’s said, that Thomas Jefferson was accountable for owning up to 650 slaves in
his life time. Ironic isn’t it? This document till this day is used to help
undeveloped countries create democracy. This document, written to create the
free world, was written by a man who held 650 people captive.
This is why history is a beautiful thing, when we dig deep we find different perspectives of it. I hope
you have fun following me this semester. Anyone who follows this blog will learn
new things and get a good laugh or two. The rest my folks is
